Crossfit instructor at the gym doing pushupsIndianapolis news channel WTHR proved fitness can be fun at the WTHR Health and Fitness Expo during the weekend of April 23 and 24.

Typically, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Orlando are home to about half of the largest 200 exhibition shows in the United States, but that April weekend, Indianapolis hosted a star-studded event. With a full schedule of activities including free health screenings, exhibits, fitness classes, and cooking demonstrations, expo visitors also met with NBC’s Josh Kaufman, actor and fitness guru Mario Lopez, and “American Ninja Warrior” Matt Iseman.

The event was not only for kids but families as well. For the first day of the weekend-long event, activities included a 10 a.m. Boomer’s Boot Camp Kids activity followed by a meet and greet with “The Voice” winner Josh Kaufamn.

Hot yoga, pilates, and a Beach Body LIVE demonstration were also featured on the list of things to do.

For those needing a little motivation, Lopez delivered an inspiring speech on adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Lopez told the crowd that he’s not a fan of diets.

“Diets don’t work,” Lopez said. “People work. You just have to make some adjustments to your lifestyle and have some discipline and then it will complement your life in every aspect.”

Lopez also delivered his three rules for healthy eating, which included that every plate should have protein, fat and carbs; that everyone should eat frequently throughout the day; and that practicing portion control is vital.

Just as important as exercise and staying active, if not more important, good nutrition is essential to a healthy lifestyle as well.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts are all part of a plan to eat healthy in addition to consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables. Foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, sodium and added sugars are acceptable; it is recommended to stay within the daily caloric intake guidelines placed for both men and women.

Wrapping up the day were Kelly Greene and Natalie Slater who hosted Zumba KIDS and BodyRock respectively.
