Ariel Winter made headlines for unexpectedly showing some skin at the 2016 SAG Awards — and for all the right reasons.

The 18-year-old Modern Family star hit the Screen Actors Guild red carpets on Jan. 31 wearing a strapless black dress with a low-cut back (which was actually fairly conservative apparel by some red carpet standards). A few viewers noticed, however, that the actress’s dress fully displayed two scars, right above the rib cage, from her breast reduction surgery last year.

It seems that viewers initially thought Winter hadn’t realized that her dress didn’t cover the scars, but she cleared up the confusion in a quick tweet that evening: “Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all. :)”

As USA Today and the second-most common requested cosmetic surgery today. But for the women who do receive reduction surgeries, it can be a life-changing operation. Not only do teens and young women often face ridicule for having large breasts — as Winter experienced, according to her interview with People — but there can be physical problems as well.

While she felt uncomfortable reading what people had to say about her “revealing” outfits, she ultimately made the choice to go from a size 32F to a 34D simply because it was physically painful.

“Being a 5-ft.-tall girl and having extremely large breasts is really ostracizing and excruciatingly painful,” Winter explained. “It was an instant weight lifted off my chest — both literally and figuratively. There’s a confidence you find when you finally feel right in your body.
